Johansen started his career in the late 1960s as the main singer of a band called the Vagabond Missionaries in Staten Island.
Then, in the early 1970s, he became the singer and songwriter for a really important punk band called the New York Dolls.
in 1975, two members, Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan, left the band. Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain, along with a few others, kept playing as the New York Dolls until 1976.
After that, Buster started his own music career as a solo artist.
His first two solo albums, David Johansen and In Style, featured several enduring originals. His self-titled album peaked at number 91 in Australia in August 1978.
Around the late 1980s, Johansen became somewhat popular using the name Buster Poindexter.
